PyroGreen

Plast Center Danmark / Danish Materials Network is in collaboration with following:

  • Aalborg University Esbjerg
  • Waste2Value
  • Permeco
  • APChemi
  • KIIT-Technology Business Incubator

which is our partners in a three-year project called “Pyrolysis for Green Fuels and enabling future green hydrogen” or in short PyroGreen. The project is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.

This project is aimed at developing technologies to turn plastic waste and agricultural waste not only into green fuels and hydrogen, but also potentially bio-chars for soil upgrading or/and platform chemicals, all based on using pyrolysis as the central process. This will provide significant reductions in CO2 emissions since these waste fractions are typically incinerated or landfilled.

The waste fractions addressed by this project contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a scale of approx. 13.5 bil tons pr. year, which accounts for 28.5 % of global GHG emissions. Successful implementation will provide both societal and economic impact in both Denmark and India through increased number of jobs as well as promote the technology developed, which will be relevant in a global context.

Through pyrolysis and subsequent processing and separation the carbon from these sources will instead provide biochar for soil enhancement from agricultural waste, naphta for virgin polymer and fuels from plastic waste as well as, with further treatment, hydrogen, and allowing released CO2 from the conversion process to be captured and enter a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) context.

When fully implemented the project will give rise to a series of plants in Denmark as well as in India.
