Circular Economy – Plastic Recycling

A project financed by the Danish Agency for Science and Innovation.

The government has set up an Advisory Board for Circular Economics. This Board has prepared the following vision:

”Our vision is that Danish business in 2030 has a global leadership in the development, implementation and export of circular solutions, and that Denmark is world-renowned as a hub for circular economics.”

The purpose of this project is to contribute to the industry so they can contribute to the vision through increased recycling of plastics. It is estimated that approx. 440,500 tonnes of plastic waste are produced in Denmark each year. Of these is approx. 310,00 tonnes incinerated, while approx. 131,500 tonnes are shipped for reprocessing and resale. Only about 3% of household waste and 40% of industrial waste are sorted and recycled.

The goal in the project period is to raise the 10 companies’ knowledge about of the recyclability of recycled plastics, especially knowledge about which types of plastics is sensible to recycle from an environmental and economic point of view and how the secondary raw materials should be handled in their processes, as they differ from virgin plastic.

It is also the goal during the project period to increase companies’ readiness to work with circular economics in the form of developing at least two new and innovative solutions / products / services – preferably across value chains. Long term, the goal is to contribute to increased use of secondary plastic raw materials for the benefit of the participating companies and the surrounding community.
