Course on the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Introduction to the Eurocluster Project MAT4EU

On 24 June 2026, a course on the EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 was held at Aalborg University in Esbjerg. The course was organised by the Danish Materials Network (Dansk Materiale Netværk), with Hülya Ucar from Reccura serving as the instructor.

The course provided an introduction to the principles of the circular economy and the background to the new regulation, which aims to reduce resource consumption and packaging waste through increased recycling and reuse. Participants were introduced to the key requirements concerning packaging design, material selection, recyclability, labelling, recycled content, and extended producer responsibility. In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the practical implementation of the regulation, including the preparation of technical documentation and companies’ responsibilities for demonstrating compliance with the regulatory requirements.

The course gave participants a comprehensive overview of the new legislation and emphasised that companies should already begin preparing for the upcoming requirements by adopting a strategic approach to sustainable packaging solutions and compliance documentation.

The participants evaluated the course very positively. They highlighted the well-structured programme, the high academic standard, and the highly practical course materials. The instructor received particular praise for her extensive expertise, her ability to explain complex topics in a clear and accessible manner, and for encouraging constructive dialogue throughout the day. Participants also appreciated that the course materials consistently referred to the relevant provisions of the regulation, making them a valuable reference resource for future use.

Several participants also emphasised the valuable exchange of knowledge among attendees and the many relevant discussions that took place during the course. A few suggested that the course could beneficially have been extended over several days, as the regulation covers many complex and highly relevant topics that would merit even more in-depth treatment. Overall, the course was considered highly beneficial and is strongly recommended for companies seeking a broader understanding of the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and its practical implications.

As part of the course, participants were also introduced to the Eurocluster project MAT4EU, including its objectives and the opportunities it offers companies to participate in international collaborations, innovation activities, and funding opportunities.

A total of 19 participants attended the event.
