Course: Introduction to Thermoplastic Composites
This course will thoroughly explore the emerging field of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics – or thermoplastic composites – , a new class of materials that expands the possibilities of fiber reinforcement in polymers. While traditional composites involve a thermosetting matrix like epoxy combined with continuous fiber reinforcements, continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics utilize thermoplastic matrices to overcome major challenges such as complicated low-rate processing, high cost, safety concerns, and recyclability issues. The outstanding combination of high reinforcement levels and efficient processing makes these materials excellent contenders against conventional materials like metals.
