On 21 May, partners, companies, experts, and stakeholders from across the Baltic Sea Region gathered at the international Flow of Plastics<\/em> conference in Malm\u00f6. The conference focused on circular solutions, plastic recycling, and the reduction of plastic waste \u2013 from source to sea.<\/p>\n

The event was organised under the Interreg South Baltic projects Circular Ocean-bound Plastic (COP) and Retail Relooped (RELOOPED), both of which work to develop and demonstrate sustainable solutions for the management, prevention, and recycling of plastic waste.<\/p>\n

Plast Center Denmark was represented at the conference by Geraldo Mihut, who participated as a speaker and presented results from work on plastic waste in the Aarhus River, as well as material analyses of recycled samples from ocean-bound plastic. The presentation highlighted how data collection, monitoring, and technical material testing can contribute to a better understanding of the journey of plastic from urban environments and waterways to the sea \u2013 and how collected plastic can be assessed as a potential resource for new circular solutions.<\/p>\n

The conference showcased innovative solutions and practical case studies demonstrating how cross-border collaboration can contribute to a more circular and resource-efficient plastics economy. The programme included expert presentations, interactive sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities among projects, companies, and stakeholders from across the value chain.<\/p>\n

The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, exchange of experiences, and dialogue on how concrete solutions can be scaled up and translated into new partnerships, business models, and initiatives that help reduce plastic pollution.<\/p>\n

Within the COP project, efforts are focused on preventing plastic waste from reaching the Baltic Sea. Through pilot activities in cities including Aarhus, Gda\u0144sk, and Rostock, large volumes of waste have been collected and analysed to generate new knowledge about how plastic travels from urban environments and waterways to the sea \u2013 and how pollution can be prevented more effectively.<\/p>\n

The conference highlighted the need for continued collaboration between businesses, research institutions, and public authorities to develop innovative solutions that reduce plastic pollution and strengthen the circular economy across the region.<\/p>\n
